Post-Mortem
From what I've seen of the exit polls in terms of demographics, Trump's base experienced attrition, but that appears to have been compensated for by increased support among a variety of groups, including non-white college-educated voters (I confess I did not see that coming).
Latino men moved 33 points towards Trump.
Households earning less than $ 100K/yr. (Hillary Clinton's "deplorables"?) continued to shift in Trump's direction.
Meanwhile, white women have remained among his most stalwart supporters (they know they can probably get an abortion if they need one).
Given that Trump's share of the popular vote in 2024 was about the same as his share in 2020, and given that Harris's share under-performed Biden's, the defections from Trump's base did not benefit Harris--despite her attempts to woo them with the promise of appointing Republicans to her cabinet and campaigning with radioactive Liz Cheney. I'm guessing those voters sat this one out.

The Duopoly Is A Disaster
We all do what we have to do to live with ourselves.
In my lifetime, my government has done a great many nefarious things, but this is the first time, that I know of, that it has actively facilitated a genocide.
For me, this is not a political question that we can agree to disagree about. It is a moral question that demands a specific response: refusal to reward in any fashion the genocidaires.
The duopoly is a disaster.

Ashes, Ashes, We All Fall Down
For some time now, I have sensed creeping Trump fatigue in the electorate. Only DT's hardcore fans want another 4 years of his narcissistic bombast, and that portion of the electorate has shrunk to cult-like proportions. It was all fun and games until Jan. 6, 2021. Then Reality set in. I suspect that many people who are currently telling pollsters that they support Trump won't bother to vote. So, even though they don't deserve it, the Dems should own this election--especially if they can get women and 20-somethings to the polls. But if 2016's "accidental President" manages to cobble together an Electoral College victory in 2024, it will be for reasons such as those described in this article. Either way, it's ashes, ashes, we all fall down.

Moral Decay
"The real moral decay of our society is illustrated in the way all mainstream political candidates can openly support war crimes currently being inflicted on people in the global south without being immediately removed from power. The way monstrous war criminals of past administrations can endorse a liberal candidate without causing self-proclaimed progressives to recoil from that candidate in horror. The way you can have the two viable candidates for the world’s most powerful elected position both pledge to continue an active genocide without instantly sparking a revolution."

American Liberals
The last item is really key to the psychology that underlies American Liberal politics. Libs want to feel good about themselves and about their country. Who doesn't? At the same time, however, they are unwilling to risk the negative consequences that may come from opposing the immorality of their own government and/or favorite politicians.
So they put on their rose-colored glasses and tell themselves that the system is basically fair for all--it just needs a little tweaking.
They shed a few crocodile tears while explaining that the Gaza genocide isn't really genocide because look how the Jews have been victimized in the past (a model non sequitur).
They resort to the lesser evil argument and then change the subject by gushing over "the statement" Michelle Obama made with her outfit at the DNC.
They order themselves another Starbucks latte and feel self-righteous about the stand they will be taking against the "vast right-wing conspiracy" when they mail in their ballots in November.
They are the banality of evil personified.
