The American Spring: Milestone Five
The fifth milestone marking the emergence of the American Spring is simply this: Bernie Sanders has brought the Party of Hope out of the woodwork throughout his campaign. Clinton, who has been trying to get back into 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. since her eviction in 2001, finds herself in a completely unexpected uphill battle—despite the support of Wall Street and all the major media.
Millions of ordinary Americans have rallied to Bernie’s “socialist” message.
Millions.
Think about that.
In a country where school children are taught that Socialism is the greatest of all evils. They are taught, in fact, that Adolph Hitler was a Socialist (the word “Fascist” having been discretely retired from American English).
Sanders has been winning primary elections and, where he hasn’t won, he has often managed to lock Clinton in dead heats. This is the same Hillary Clinton who was all but coronated before the Iowa caucus. Only one year ago, this would have been unimaginable.
Oh, yes. There's something happening here and you don't know what it is, do you Mr. Jones?

The American Spring
By fits and starts, the American Spring is aborning.
The first significant milestone was the election of Barack Obama in 2008. In retrospect, it appears that BHO's role in the incipient re-invention of American politics has been to allay the fears of the power elite: by abandoning universal health care and getting quickly into lock-step with the military-industrial complex, he managed to satisfy the elite that they had not lost control of the process. They let down their guard.
The second milestone was the initiation of the Occupy movement on September 17, 2011--subsequently crushed with the cooperation of President Obama. In 2012, seeing no need to replace him with anyone more congenial, many plutocrats supported Obama's re-election.
The third milestone was Obama's decline into Lame Duck status in 2014. Now rendered completely "harmless," he began to pursue a mildly progressive agenda and, as a courtesy for six years of faithful service, the elite left him alone to create his "legacy." In so doing, however, he has allowed some on the Left to fill their lungs with freer air. Some of the youth have begun to imagine heretofore unimaginable political possibilities.
The fourth milestone (April 30, 2015), Senator Bernie Sanders announced his candidacy for President of the United States. The plutocrats, perceiving no threat, smiled indulgently upon his campaign and continued to pour money into the coffers of their favored shill, Hillary Rodham Clinton.
But there's something happening here and you don't know what it is, do you, Mr. Jones?

Hillary's Sapphic Tragedy
I read Terry Castle's recent "diary" entry in the LRB as an "outing" of Hillary Clinton. If my interpretation is accurate, and Hillary Clinton is, in fact, a lesbian, I find her a far more sympathetic figure than I did when I assumed she was heterosexual. For now I understand that Hillary's political ambitions have forced her to engage in a complicated series of subterfuges.
Before, I saw Hillary playing Tammy Wynette to Bill Clinton's George Jones. But Tammy divorced George, and I could not, for the life of me, understand why a self-assertive "liberated" woman like Hillary never left a serial philanderer like Bill.
Did she really cherish a more traditional view of marriage than, say, Ronald Reagan? Had she not noticed the fact that Reagan's divorce did not seriously undermine his political career? Or did she think that, as a woman, voters would hold her to a different standard than they would hold a man? Perhaps she did. But in light of her husband's long track record of infidelities, I think it quite plausible that the electorate would forgive her--even applaud her--if, after 2000, she and Bill chose to go their separate ways.
There would be decidedly less applause, however, if Hillary left Bill for someone such as Huma Abedin. For Huma is not only a woman (married to an unfaithful husband), but a Muslim. Perhaps, after all of her struggles in politics and heterosexual marriage, it was just Hillary's luck to fall in love with someone who would be perceived by many of her adversaries as the ultimate political liability.
All of which leads me to see the life of Hillary Clinton as the stuff of Greek tragedy. I also see the loose relationship that she has often exhibited with the facts (e.g., her shifting position on same-sex marriage or on NAFTA, her seemingly delusional tale of coming under sniper fire in Bosnia, etc.) as part of a larger pattern of deceit. Hillary Clinton has never allowed the public to see her as she understands herself: a woman who loves, and seeks sexual gratification from, other women. The lies and prevarications begin there and the habit of spinning like a top whenever she is questioned spills over into her professional life.
This realization, however, has not persuaded me to change my position on Hillary's candidacy for President of the United States. Hillary Clinton is a plutocrat and, as such, represents everything that is wrong with American politics. I want her out of the Presidential race; I want her out of national politics altogether. But now I want her out for an additional reason: she is 68 years of age and, if I'm correct, a closeted homosexual. I have no problem with her gender, age, or sexual orientation--in my view, none of those facts disqualify her in the least to be President of the United States. Her Wall Street pandering and war mongering most definitely do.
My additional reason is this: even troglodyte Neo-Cons deserve a decent shot at personal fulfillment and happiness. For her own sake, Hillary Clinton should divorce Bill and ride off into the sunset with her lesbian lover and enjoy the time she has left on this earth being true to herself and--finally--honest with the rest of us.

Hillary Clinton Lying For 13 Minutes Straight
This video compilation takes me back to the 1990s and my complete disillusionment with the Clintons. Hillary appears to be a pathological liar. Her "recollections" of landing in Bosnia are so contrary to the evidence as to be downright creepy.
Hillary Clinton's election could well set back women in politics in the U.S. for at least a generation. Justified or not, those who wish to argue that "a woman's place is not in the Oval Office" will be able to point to HRC and say, "Look what happened when we elected a woman the first time."
We've waited this long for a female President, we can wait a little longer. Electing a female psychopath cannot help the cause of gender equality in the United States.

Love Live The American Progressive Dream!
In national polling, the Party of Desperate Hope (the Sanders Party) has substantially more support than the Party of Nihilistic Despair (the Trump Party).
We should take comfort in that fact--and would, were it not for one thing: another Clinton seeks to gratify her insatiable desire for power. The Clinton Party (the Party of Cynical Opportunism) stands between the American people and the revitalization of their better natures.
Long live the American Progressive Dream! Long Live the Invisible Whitmanian Republic!

Party Politics
At present, we seem to have a four party system in the United States.
Although Donald Trump is running as a Republican, he really represents something other than that Party's establishment. Trump's Party is the Party of Nihilistic Despair.
Then there is the Republican Party establishment, which is clearly at a loss as to what to do about the Trump insurgency. Trump may very well make them irrelevant this November.
The Democratic Party establishment has a presumptive head, Hillary Clinton. Over the past quarter of a century, Hillary has worked in tandem with her husband Bill to transform the Democratic Party into the Party of Cynical Opportunism. The Clintons bait the Plutocracy with Lefty talk and then sell them their support. This is their established pattern and I see no signs of it changing. One could also call the Clintonian Democratic Party the Party of Bait and Switch.
Finally, there is the party of Bernie Sanders: the Party of Desperate Hope. This is the Party that first emerged in 2008 and helped to elect Barack Obama--only to find his version of "hope" to be a variation of Clintonian "bait and switch."
The Party of Desperate Hope remains both desperate and hopeful. It is the Party of the Invisible Whitmanian Republic.
