Pericles' Funeral Oration
Scholars debate whether or to what extent Pericles' funeral oration is (1) an accurate transcription of Pericles' address and (2) an accurate depiction of life in ancient Athens during the Peloponnesian War. Be that as it may, it is a classic argument reflecting Thucydides' conviction that a true democracy cannot exist in the form of what today we term a "Security State." We may have one or the other but not (as many of us seem content to assert) both.
