Turning Back the Clock
In
the early 19th century, the British Tories and Whigs were practically
indistinguishable from one another. "William Hazlitt compared them to
two rival stagecoaches that splashed mud over each other while
travelling along the same road" (Peter Ackroyd, Dominion, 5). And so it
is with the Democan/Republicrat War Party in the U.S. today. In fact,
much of American socio-economic and political life in the early 21st
century is reminiscent of early 19th century England's--thanks to the
collusion of the two major parties over the past 40 years.
