Make a New Year's Resolution that Matters

The thugs have been allowed to run their protection racket and call it "security" for long enough. It is time for the remaining human beings among us (and here's how to demonstrate your humanity) to refuse to act as their apologists, or to applaud them when cued to do so at sporting events and on airplanes, or to sing their anthems, or to vote for their candidates, or to fund their wars. Friends don't let friends join the military-police-prison-industrial-complex.

Creeping Fascism

When fascism comes calling adorned with a swastika and speaking a foreign language, most Americans are able to reject it (some, like those pictured above, embrace it). But when it comes waving the flag and carrying a cross, it is welcomed in. The creeping fascism of American politics since 1980 has distorted our political perceptions. In 2023, Richard Nixon is a Liberal. But Liberals in the U.S. abandoned their cherished values of liberty and equality FOR ALL in exchange for power. It is Liberals who have pushed me to the Left. As for the Right in this country, I have trouble taking it seriously these days--except as a threat. But Authoritarian Liberals--who do not waver in their support of a Democratic President despite his complicity in genocide--are no less serious a threat to the future of the American people and, indeed, the future of this planet. The tragedy is that they cannot see it.

The State of Play

Failure of Nerve

Moyn's excellent book could be titled "Failure of Nerve: How Liberalism Betrayed the Left." But he holds out hope for Liberals. I wish I could share his optimism. Sentiment (in this case, fear) has trumped principles in Liberalism since the middle of the 20th century. You cannot count on those who lack the courage of what they claim to be their convictions.

An Open Letter to Genocide Joe

Dear Mr. President:

You are LBJ and Gaza is your Vietnam.

Elected in 2020 because you were not Donald Trump (did you imagine you were elected on your merits?), you have cost yourself the 2024 election.

More importantly, however, you are drenched in the blood of innocent women, men, and, most horrifically, children.

There are not "two sides" (pro and con) to genocide.

There are not "two sides" (pro and con) to apartheid.

Remarkably, you have declared yourself a Zionist. Every human being with a functioning conscience is aware that Zionism has evolved into a form of militant racism.

You do not belong in the Oval Office but in the Hague.

What a pathetic end to a sometimes-promising Presidency.

Democracy in Action

There’s nothing like watching “democracy in action.”

I’ve written to Colorado’s senators (both Dems) and my Republican representative in the House (Doug Lamebrain) about Gaza and received one response so far from one of the Dems (“We stand by Israel”). I expect the same response from the other Dem. I won’t bother to read Lamebrain’s response. I write him from time to time about a wide variety of matters just to give his staffers something to do. It still takes them about 6 months to send a form letter. I’ve started and stopped a letter to Biden several times. Now that he’s embraced the role of weapons dealer to the world (emulating his former boss) and what’s-a-little-genocide-between-friends, my stomach turns just thinking of the man. I used to write Trump satirical letters and looked forward to their replies. Whoever read them did not appear to recognize sarcasm and so they thanked me for my support and assured me that DT was at it every day, making America great. Or maybe they just didn’t read them and cranked out the same response to whatever mail they received.

People assure me that political staffers keep tallies of “for” vs. “against” letters regarding specific policies, though I suspect the “for” letters make it into a rectangular file while the “against” letters go into a circular one.

Contrary to the standard civics-class rhetoric, we are not the citizens of a republic but the subjects of an empire. I keep my volume of the writings of Tacitus close at hand. I frequently advise my students to read Tacitus and Whitman and ask themselves what they want the future to look like. Many have already been absorbed into the System—as we all are—working at jobs, raising their kids, paying taxes to the Imperial government with its never-ending-wars.

I must continually remind myself that the "real terrorists" are in Gaza. But, if I don’t, I can count on the liberal media to remind me.

Complicity and apathy, with a dash of well-meaning liberal sentimentality, make the world go ‘round.

The Death of the Liberal Class

Where the Palestinian people are concerned, the silence of the Liberals is deafening. But that is not their only betrayal. Over a decade ago, Chris Hedges called them out.

The Latest Embarrassment to Occupy the Oval Office

A Pair of War Criminals in a Death Embrace.

According to the NYT (ever-perfidious when it comes to reporting on the Israelis), Mr. Biden toured the hospital rubble and opined that it had been bombed by "the other team." First of all, "the other team"? What is this, a football match? Secondly, Biden can hardly see three feet in front of his own face. How is it possible for him to look at rubble and determine who is responsible for it?
